Why investment decisions in the energy sector are getting harder

Investment needs are rising. Capital, time and delivery capacity remain limited.

Energy companies and infrastructure operators must invest simultaneously in grids, generation, storage, heat supply and new business models. Yet not all projects can be delivered at the same time.

The central challenge is therefore not only calculating individual business cases. It is about prioritising investments meaningfully across different technologies, time horizons and dependencies.

High investment pressure

Grid expansion, renewable generation, storage, heat supply and the electrification of new demand all require substantial additional investment. At the same time, financing headroom, personnel resources and delivery capacity remain limited.

Uncertain economics and bankability

Energy prices, capture rates, negative price hours, subsidies, network charges and new revenue or contract models can materially change a project's economics and bankability. Decisions must be made even though many assumptions cannot be reliably forecast over an asset's lifetime.

Grid, permitting and deliverability

Grid connection, curtailment, permitting processes, lead times and available skilled labour increasingly determine whether and when a project can actually be delivered. An economically attractive project may as a result be delayed, constrained, or need to be realised in a different configuration.

Portfolio dependencies

Grids, generation, storage, heat and demand cannot be planned independently of one another. Individual business cases may each be plausible yet together lead to excessive capital commitment or an unbalanced risk profile. What matters is which combination and sequence holds up across several plausible futures.

Making business cases robust and financeable

Which assumptions drive value and bankability? Where are the break-even and tipping points? What conditions must hold for the investment case to still work in a downside scenario? We stress-test existing models, develop robust scenarios, and make visible whether an investment is resilient or hinges on a few optimistic assumptions.

  • Is a BESS investment viable across different revenue and market scenarios?
  • Which contract or hedging structure improves bankability without giving up too much upside?
  • How strongly do NPV, IRR, DSCR and capital requirements react to changing assumptions?

Determining the right project configuration

Which combination of generation, storage, grid connection and revenue model is economical and robust? We compare alternative set-ups and show under which conditions the preferred solution changes.

Typical questions include, for example:

  • PV without storage, or PV plus BESS?
  • Co-location or separate sites?
  • Shared or separate grid connection?
  • Immediate full build-out or phased expansion?
  • Merchant, PPA, floor, or tolling?

Setting investment timing and delivery pathway

Should you invest now, wait, pilot, or expand incrementally? We weigh the value of early market entry against the benefits of additional information, falling costs and preserved flexibility.

Among other things, we consider:

  • forgone revenue from a later start
  • possible CAPEX trajectories
  • connection and permitting risks
  • regulatory or subsidy time windows
  • the value of a staged investment

Structuring supply and infrastructure decisions

How should grid offtake, self-generation, long-term contracts, storage and flexible demand be combined? We help operators of large loads and critical infrastructure assess security of supply, economics and expansion pathway together.

  • Which power supply strategy is resilient for a new data centre?
  • When are grid offtake, PPA, self-generation or storage the most sensible combination?

More than 20 years of experience at the intersection of energy, investment and strategy

Daniel Dantine combines 15 years at OMV — most recently as VP New Energy — with around six years of independent strategy and decision advisory.

His focus is on energy investments, business models, financial planning and complex decisions under uncertainty. He combines a management perspective with analytical depth: structuring alternatives, modelling scenarios, assessing risk, and translating this into robust investment and governance decisions.

This capability does not end with the advisory outcome. Daniel builds financial models and digital decision tools that companies can continue to use and scale themselves. With Net Zero Scout, he developed and implemented a SaaS solution in productive use for managing industrial decarbonisation.
